On Thursday, April 13, on a sunny, eighty-degree day at the Antioch/Lakes High School tennis courts in Lake Villa, IL, the competition on the courts heated up as well. McHenry College and the College of Lake County were both undefeated heading into Thursday's match.
At #1 and #2 singles, CLC's
Billy Friedman and
Gavin Murrie continued their undefeated play by beating McHenry's #1 and #2 player decisively.
McHenry countered by beating CLC's #3 and #4 singles players,
Memphis Gallego and
Lukas Januskis. The dual match stood at 2-2 with #5 and #6 singles matches going to match tiebreakers after the opponents split the first two sets of both matches. Being decided in a match tiebreak, McHenry edged CLC's #5 player,
Mike Kim. At #6 singles, CLC's
Erik Delgado and his McHenry opponent each were on the edge of needing only 10 points to win the match tiebreak. But needing to win by a two-point margin, it took a 16 points to 14 points tiebreak for CLC's
Erik Delgado to pull out the victory and tie the team score at 3-3 after the singles play.
The three doubles matches would decide the outcome of the dual match with McHenry. At #1 doubles,
Billy Friedman and
Gavin Murrie again proved decisive in their victory to give CLC a one point lead.
CLC needed to win at least one of the remaining two doubles matches to win the dual meet. CLC's #2 doubles team of
Memphis Gallego and
Lukas Januskis and CLC's #3 doubles team of
Mike Kim and
Erik Delgado, both played extremely well, and both teams won their matches to give CLC a tough 6-3 victory over conference and regional rival McHenry College.
The CLC Men's Tennis Team improves to 5-0. They will travel to Peru, Illinois on Saturday to play Illinois Valley Community College.
