College of Lake County Men's Tennis Team Competes in

2023 NJCAA Men's Tennis National Tournament

The College of Lake County (CLC) Men's Tennis team traveled to McKinney, Texas to compete in the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Tennis Division 1 National Tournament.  This was the sixth year in a row that the CLC Men's Tennis Team has qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament, not counting 2020 when the tournament was not held due to Covid 19,

In the past six years the CLC Men's Tennis Team has won the NJCAA Region 4 Championship three years and  finished second three years.  This year they qualified for the national tournament by finishing second in the 2023 regional tournament.

The Lancers Men's Tennis Team finished 23rd in the nation at the national tournament.  Competing against players representing many countries of the world, the competition was intense, but the Lancers played some of the best tennis of the year.

Number one singles player Billy Friedman experienced his first singles loss of the entire season in battling a player from the Netherlands in a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

Number two singles player Gavin Murrie lost his main draw match to a player from Mexico.

Number three singles player Memphis Gallego, number four singles player Lukas Januskis, and number five singles player Mike Kim lost their first round matches.

The only Lancer Men's Tennis Team main draw victory came from Erik Delgado at number six singles.  Erik, who was this year's regional champion at number six singles, won his first match 6-0, 6-3 to go into the second round of the main draw.

Players losing in the first round of the main draw go into a consolation tournament.  The lone bright spot in the consolation tournament was Mike Kim's victory at number five singles.  Mike defeated his opponent 8-5.

After playing great doubles in the regional tournament, the CLC Men's Tennis Team found the competition very tough at the NJCAA National Tournament.  The Lancer men came closest to victory at the number two doubles position.  Memphis Gallego and Lukas Januskis came within points of a first round victory, losing 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.  Number one doubles team Billy Friedman and Gavin Murrie and number three doubles team Mike Kim and Erik Delgado played some great tennis but went down to defeat in their matches.

The CLC Men's Tennis Team had a very good spring season.  They finished second in regionals and qualified for the NJCAA National Tennis Tournament.  They finished second in conference with a 4-1 conference record.  The men's tennis team's overall season record was 8-2.
