Thursday, September 17, the College of Lake County Women's Tennis Team opened their fall 2020 season taking on conference rivals Moraine Valley Community College.
For the second consecutive year, the Lancers came away with a one-point, 5-4 victory that was determined by the final match of the event. Just like last year, the final match was decided with a match tiebreak. College of Lake County sophomore Carly Burgeson found herself in the similar situation last season giving CLC the win. This season Burgeson had a new doubles partner in Freshman Haley Quick. Burgeson and Quick went on to win the decisive match 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
Past competitions between CLC and Moraine Valley have been extremely competitive. Thursday nights contest was no different. This year's match had six of the nine matches decided by tiebreaking games. From the beginning to the end, the matches were all very close.
Sophomore Carly Burgeson, playing at number one singles, scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Freshman Haley Quick also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 at number two singles. The rest of the singles matches were decided by tiebreaks. Nicole Miclat at number three singles was victorious with a 7-6(5), 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) win. Freshman Anjie Rodriguez at number four singles lost in a match tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).
At number five singles Dianna Sangabriel won in a match tiebreak, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9). Freshman Kate Jackson's match at number six singles came down to a tiebreaker won by Moraine Valley by a score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
The College of Lake County was victorious in two additional singles matches as freshmen Ellie Kiscellus won 6-2, 6-1 and freshman Ali Greissinger won 7-6(6), 6-3.
Heading into the doubles competition CLC was up 4-2 in the match, but the match was far from over.
At number two doubles Miclat and Rodriguez lost 6-3, 6-0 and freshmen Kaylie Smith and Nicole Tomas played another match decided by a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 10-8). Kate Jackson and Ellie Kiscellus were victories in an additional doubles match over Moraine Valley 6-4, 7-5.
With the score now even in the official matches at 4-4, the last match on the court playing under the lights was the number one doubles match. CLC's number one team of Carly Burgeson and Haley Quick. The match 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 10-8), clinching a CLC dual match victory 5-4, but the two-point margin in that last match. The win gives the Lancers a 1-0 record on the season and a share of the Conference lead early on in the season. CLC's next action is this Sunday, Sep. 20 at Lakes High School when they will take on out-of-conference foe Sauk Valley Community College.
