The College of Lake County women's tennis team delivered a strong performance at the Region IV Championships this past weekend, highlighted by multiple podium finishes and a pair of national qualifiers.
Valerie Mendoza got the Lancers off to a great start with a first-round win over College of DuPage at #5 singles. Melanie Garcia battled tough competition at #4 singles, falling to the eventual flight champion, while Danielle Gatta showed grit in a tight 4–6 second set loss at #3 singles.
Linnea Lindstrom and Sasha Baer powered through their early matches at #2 and #1 singles, respectively, both advancing to the semifinals along with Mendoza. Mendoza capped off her run with a runner-up finish, exceeding her #3 seed, while Lindstrom battled for three hours in the finals before also claiming second place. Baer, meanwhile, emerged victorious in a hard-fought championship match to capture the Region IV Singles Title and earn Region IV Player of the Year honors.
In doubles play, Garcia and Gatta showed improvement before falling to Illinois Valley, while the tandem of Lindstrom and Baer continued their dominant season. After defeating Elgin in the opening round, the pair upset #2-seeded Illinois Valley—avenging an earlier dual match loss—then went on to defeat top-seeded Sauk Valley 6–2, 6–3 in the finals.
With first-place finishes in both singles and doubles, Sasha Baer and Linnea Lindstrom have qualified for the NJCAA National Championships, which will be held in May.
