The College of Lake County women's soccer team celebrated Sophomore Day with a 2-0 victory over the Harry S. Truman College Falcons on Saturday, improving its season record to 9-3-1.
The Lancers controlled much of the first half, recording 11 shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net before halftime.
CLC broke through in the 52nd minute when freshman
Alexa Vega lofted a ball into the penalty box. Sophomore
Olivia Christy controlled the pass and delivered a nifty left-footed strike over the oncoming Falcons goalkeeper to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers continued to defend their advantage before adding an insurance goal in the final two minutes of the match. Freshman
Jocelyn Lopez intercepted a pass from the Truman goalkeeper and calmly sent the ball into the net to secure the 2-0 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Genesis Hurtado helped preserve the shutout for CLC. Although the Falcons did not record a direct shot on goal, Hurtado and the Lancers' defense maintained a clean sheet throughout the contest.
Saturday's victory also provided an opportunity to recognize five sophomores for their contributions to the program. The Lancers congratulated sophomores and captains
Evelyn Czarnik,
Yatziri Martinez Gomez, and
Grace Quirke, along with
Kaylan Acosta and Christy, for their dedication and leadership.
The Lancers will look to carry their momentum into their next contest when they host the Rock Valley College Eagles next Wednesday. Rock Valley enters the matchup as the defending region champion, setting the stage for an important test for CLC as the season continues.
