The College of Lake County women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit Wednesday to defeat the Morton College Panthers 3-2 and secure the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship.
The conference title marks the third Skyway championship for the Lancers since 2019.
CLC controlled much of the first half, creating pressure and maintaining possession, but Morton broke through with 13 minutes remaining before halftime. The Panthers found space behind the Lancers' defense and converted on a breakaway opportunity to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Lancers wasted little time responding after the break.
In the 51st minute, sophomore
Olivia Christy leveled the match at 1-1. Freshman
Denise Acosta delivered a pass through the air to Christy, who controlled the ball and pushed her shot past the Panthers goalkeeper.
Just five minutes later, CLC took its first lead of the night.
Freshman
Jocelyn Lopez received a well-placed pass from freshman
Abby Staehle and made a strong individual run, beating multiple Morton defenders before sending a shot over the Panthers goalkeeper to put the Lancers ahead 2-1.
CLC added another insurance goal with 14 minutes remaining. Freshman
Stephany Galvan finished a shot over the Morton goalkeeper after receiving an assist from freshman
Alexa Vega, extending the Lancers' advantage to 3-1.
Morton refused to go quietly, however. With seven minutes remaining, the Panthers scored their second goal of the night off a corner kick, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and setting up a tense finish.
The Lancers held firm defensively during the final minutes, successfully killing off the remaining clock to secure the victory and celebrate another conference championship.
Freshman goalkeeper
Genesis Hurtado played a key role in the championship-clinching victory, making four saves in the win.
With the 3-2 victory, the Lancers added another championship to the program's history and secured their third Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title since 2019.
