Women's basketball showed flashes in a 50-38 loss against the Wilbur Wright College Rams Tuesday.
Having lost this recent game, it puts the Lancers at an unfortunate 0-7 start heading into the second month of the season.
The Lancers were confused by the Rams' zone defense therefore, causing them to be scoreless at the beginning of the game.
"We settled for too many jump shots against their zone," Brokmeier said. "We just couldn't make the shots we had."
Fortunately for them, neither of the teams were able to establish much of anything in the first quarter.
In a quarter plagued by shooting woes, the score merely ended in a 2-0 Rams lead.
Going into the second quarter, the basket began to open a little bit for both teams.
Wilbur Wright College outscored the Lancers, 17-8, in a quarter where they were able to ride the scoring of their bench. The long range scoring of Rams' Guard Chelsea Thornton accounted for the majority of the quarter's 25 points.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Head Coach Kyle Brokmeier sought to set the tempo early in the second half.
"He made it short and sweet, it was 'you guys need to make some shots,'" Forward Kristen O'Brien said.
Heading into the third, O'Brien did exactly that. A rapid procession of three point shots by O'Brien catapulted the Lancers back to just a one-point deficit halfway into the quarter.
"Honestly, it was just relaxing and trusting myself to put something up," O'Brien said. "Once they started falling it was easy after that."
O'Brien ended the game with the most points for the Lancers behind her 18-point performance.
However, after the measurable comeback, the Lancers weren't able to continue their momentum.
The Rams' zone defense started to slow down the Lancers again while simultaneously their offense continued its scoring.
"As we got into the game, we started making shots, but unfortunately they started making shots too," said Brokmeier.
This allowed them a slim lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
With the Lancers' defense unable to check the Rams' offense, the Rams were able to expand they're lead behind the closeout play of their guards.
The Lancers surged again behind the 11-point quarter of Guard Atiana Bey-Wray.
With her burst of scoring in the final few minutes of the game Bey-Wray ended with the second most points for the Lancers with 13 points.
Guard Kennedy Worrell also showed flashes throughout the game despite her low-scoring performance. With her 9 rebounds and 6 assists, she was able to facilitate a smooth movement of the ball for the Lancers.
Despite their efforts, it was unfortunately not enough as the Wilbur Wright College still outscored CLC 16-12 in the final quarter of the game.
"We just lost momentum towards the end," O'Brien said. "We got slowed down."
Heavily outscored from the bench, the Lancers ended the game with a 50-38 loss.
Fortunately, the second month of the Lancers' schedule looks promising as it filled with teams that they have a history of close games with.
