The College of Lake County women's soccer team capped off its home schedule in style Sunday afternoon, defeating nationally ranked No. 19 Lincoln Land Community College 2-0 in Grayslake. The victory came on Sophomore Day as the Lancers celebrated their six second-year players.
The first half was tightly contested, with both teams trading chances until freshman
Milanie Martinez broke the deadlock. With 21:19 remaining in the half, Martinez launched a long-distance strike that soared over the outstretched arms of the Loggers' goalkeeper, putting the Lancers ahead 1-0.
The second half brought even more intensity as the Loggers pressed for an equalizer, but the Lancers' defense and freshman goalkeeper
Makayla Doschadis stood firm. Doschadis turned away 11 shots to earn the shutout.
With 6:44 left in the match, the Lancers sealed the win when freshman
Diana Avitia sliced through the Loggers' back line and delivered a perfect pass to freshman
Kylie Parisi, who calmly finished to make it 2-0.
The win marked a statement victory for the Lancers against a top-20 opponent and provided a memorable send-off for the team's sophomores in their final home appearance.
The Lancers will look to carry that momentum as they go on the road Wednesday at Truman College.
