The College of Lake County women's soccer team opened Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play in dominant fashion Wednesday, defeating the Prairie State College Pioneers 5-0 at home in Grayslake. The conference opener was a tightly contested match early, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in the first half. The Lancers finally broke through in the 35th minute when freshman Jocelyn Lopez scored her first collegiate goal. Freshman Madelyn Glanton assisted on the goal, giving CLC a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Lancers came out in the 2nd half with renewed energy and quickly added to their advantage. In the 54th minute, freshman Marissa Lemus delivered a beautiful header into the net off a perfectly placed corner-kick cross from freshman Denise Acosta, extending the Lancers' lead to 2-0. Just five minutes later, Lopez struck again. In the 59th minute, she scored her second goal of the match, with Acosta recording her second assist of the night to put CLC ahead 3-0. The Lancers continued to pressure the Pioneers late in the match. In the 85th minute, freshman Stephany Galvan scored a fantastic goal over the keeper's outstretched arms. Freshman Alexia Pacheco picked up the assist as CLC increased its lead to 4-0. Lopez wasn't finished. In the closing minutes, Galvan returned the favor by assisting Lopez on her third goal of the night. The goal completed Lopez's hat trick and capped the scoring as the Lancers secured the 5-0 victory. Defensively, CLC turned in a strong performance from start to finish. Freshman goalkeeper Genesis Hurtado made two saves while earning her second shutout of the season. The victory gives the Lancers an impressive start to conference play and improves their momentum early in the season. CLC will look to continue its strong start Friday at home against region opponent Joliet Junior College.
